STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math—and the STEM approach to teaching and learning has been a hot topic in education circles for a number of years. Integrating the content and skills of science, technology, engineering, and math begins as early as preschool, launching students on a pathway of learning that focuses on logical reasoning, critical thinking, collaboration, and investigation. The goal of STEM education is to prepare students for post-secondary study and the 21st-century global workforce.

FCPL already supports STEM through our collections and programs but is increasing the emphasis on STEM to meet the needs of area students and to support the goals of local and statewide education initiatives.

GSK Science in the Summer™: Chemistry Level I

GSK Science in the Summer™ will introduce students to Chemistry through interesting investigations that will allow them to explore physical and chemical changes, learn about "matter," make crystals, and determine if liquids are acids, bases, or neutrals. The four-hour program is held over two days. This is a free and fun experiment-oriented course taught by certified teachers to 15 students entering second and third grades.

Monday Playgroup at the Library! (ages 0-3)

Weather Forecasting

Are you a budding meteorologist? Join us for this three week program and learn about weather temperature changes, precipitation, wind direction, and barometric air pressure. Create your own rain gauge, anemometer and barometer and record all your data in your own weather journal. Registration required. MUST attend all three weeks. Ages 8-11
