STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math—and the STEM approach to teaching and learning has been a hot topic in education circles for a number of years. Integrating the content and skills of science, technology, engineering, and math begins as early as preschool, launching students on a pathway of learning that focuses on logical reasoning, critical thinking, collaboration, and investigation. The goal of STEM education is to prepare students for post-secondary study and the 21st-century global workforce.

FCPL already supports STEM through our collections and programs but is increasing the emphasis on STEM to meet the needs of area students and to support the goals of local and statewide education initiatives.

Pop-Up Lab - Hands-On Science for Kids!

Urbana Library presents the Pop-Up Lab! When school is closed, the library is open! Join us from 10:00am until 5:00pm. Each Pop-Up Lab will feature a new, self-guided activity for kids to enjoy on their day off. No registration required. Art Zone: STEM + Art =STEAM

What does art have to do with science, technology, engineering, and math? In this class we will explore how science, technology, engineering, and math play an important part in the creation of art. We will explore several techniques and methods to create a 3-D piece of art to take home. All materials and tools will be provided, and no previous drawing experience is required.

Monday Playgroup at the Library! (ages 0-3)

Enjoy an hour and a half of independent play during which you and your child can socialize with other parents, caregivers and children! The library will provide the space and a variety of educational toys to explore and share! For ages 0-3.

Future Filmakers Digital Workshop (for ages 6 - 11)

During this monthly workshop we will focus on the artistic and technical aspects of digital filmmaking for creating stop motion movies. Participants will learn film editing, animation, and camera techniques. We encourage kids to B.Y.O.D (Bring Your Own Device) and will be using software that requires iOS 5.0 or later on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Don't have a device - no worries. We will have some to share!
