STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math—and the STEM approach to teaching and learning has been a hot topic in education circles for a number of years. Integrating the content and skills of science, technology, engineering, and math begins as early as preschool, launching students on a pathway of learning that focuses on logical reasoning, critical thinking, collaboration, and investigation. The goal of STEM education is to prepare students for post-secondary study and the 21st-century global workforce.

FCPL already supports STEM through our collections and programs but is increasing the emphasis on STEM to meet the needs of area students and to support the goals of local and statewide education initiatives.

Petite Playgroup at the Library!

Enjoy an hour of independent play during which you and your child can socialize with other parents, caregivers and children! Each playgroup will start with 15 minutes of stories, rhymes and songs led by your friendly children's librarian. The library will provide the space and a variety of educational toys to explore and share! For ages 0-3.

STEMsational Challenge!

Join us for this STEMsational Experience. On July 23rd, we'll be conducting a Bottle Rocket Experience. You can bring your own 2-liter or smaller bottle with soda-size top, decorated or not. (The top of the rocket will be the bottom of the bottle.)How high can yours go? You get to pump it with our bicycle pump for blast off! (You might get wet.)

2 o'clock STEM Wednesdays

On June 25 (Egg Drop Challenge), July 23 (Bottle Rocket Challenge), and August 20 (Slingshot Challenge), we will have special STEMsational Challenges. Contact the library for more information and to register for these three events.

LEGO Skills Workshop

Join us for a special evening program. Explore some different ways to construct and play with LEGO blocks as we make some rules for a few challenge activities and try our luck at creating some mazes with baseplates. Best for ages 6-11. STEM

The a-MAZE-ing Marble Run!

We're making our own homemade marble run tracks out of masking tape and cardboard recyclables! Design, build and test your own unique track design and then watch those marbles fly! A great hands-on way to start thinking about the basics of physics. For kids grades 1-5 with an adult. Extra cardboard tubes / recyclables welcome.
