R.E.A.D. ® with Wags for Hope

Improve your reading skills and make a new friend by reading aloud to a specially trained "listening" animal! The Reading Education Assistance Dogs (R.E.A.D.) program works to improve children's reading and communication skills by providing registered therapy animals who volunteer with their owner/handler (as a team)to meet with and listen to children read.

hosting guest lecturer Scott Bell. The Chief of Resource Management for Catoctin Mountain Park, Mr. Bell will explain the long and colorful history of the Catoctin Mountain Park region. This lecture is free and open to the public.

The Thurmont Historical Society and the Thurmont Regional Library are hosting guest lecturer Art Callaham sharing the Fort Ritchie Story. Mr. Callaham worked on base for 21 years. Learn how 800 acres in Maryland and a mountain top in Pennsylvania evolved through ice production, the Maryland National Guard, an intelligence training center, and a tuberculosis hospital, to a critical communications link in the nation’s defense, becoming the operational support facility for a "super secret" underground facility that could have housed the president of the United States.

Dog Days of Summer Fun Extravaganza

Join us for a special day celebrating Man's Best Friend! Read with a special therapy dog (from the Wags for Hope organization), meet a local vet and learn some training tips from the Bark Busters. Don't forget to stop by the library the week before to vote for the "cutest dog in Thurmont".
