Battlefield Medicine: Trauma Care in the Civil War

Civil War soldiers suffered devastating casualties. Have you ever wondered who took care of them? This program explains and demonstrates medical practices of the time. Learn about Civil War ammunition and the types of wounds it cause. A costumed interpreter will also talk about casualties, how they were evacuated from their location and where they were treated. Also, learn about Dr. Jonathan Letterman and his revolutionary system of evacuation. Presented by the National Museum of Civil War Medicine, this is the final session in a three-part series. Napoleon Bonaparte supposedly said that “an army marches on its stomach,” and this remark proved very true during the Civil War. Feeding hundreds of thousands of men was one of the greatest logistical challenges for both sides during four years of war. Learn what the rank and file of Civil War armies ate while on campaign and how soldiers might keep and prepare their food in the field. The monotony of army food was not only boring, it was seriously detrimental to one’s health, leading many soldiers to creatively supplement modest government-issued rations.
