So Long, Summer...

So Long, Summer.

Another FCPL Summer Reading Program has drawn to a close, but the memories of leisurely reading, fun activities, and lively programs during the lazy, hazy days of summer linger on.

This summer FCPL partnered with Westview Promenade for the Summer Reading Program kick-off with Mr. Jon and Friends. More than 600 people turned out to sing and dance—and many of them registered for the Summer Reading Program that day. First Friday Fun Fests attracted hundreds of kids and their caregivers throughout the summer for storytimes, LEGO® creations, craft activities, and special appearances by local businesses and organizations, including the Frederick Keys’ mascot, Keyote.

In addition to the First Friday Fun Fests at the Westview Promenade, FCPL branches throughout the county joined in the fun with live performances by Charlie Hope, Leonardo, and Milkshake, as well as magic demonstrations, puppet shows, and animal meet-and-greets. “Our free programs are the cornerstone of our Summer Reading Program each year and something families really look forward to,” says Janet Vogel, Children’s Services Supervisor at the C. Burr Artz Public Library in Frederick.

“It’s so important to encourage kids to keep reading throughout the summer,” Vogel continues, adding that multiple studies have shown that reading over the summer helps kids beat “the summer slide.” “Any type of reading helps kids maintain their skills, and reading for pleasure increases the likelihood that they will pick out a second book when they finish the first,” Vogel says. Two recent studies have demonstrated that Summer Reading Programs at libraries are instrumental in beating the summer slide.

The growing success of FCPL’s Summer Reading Program wouldn’t be possible without the support of our generous sponsors: PNC Bank, The Frederick News-Post, Friends of FCPL, and Westview Promenade.

While the Summer Reading Program has wrapped up for the year, the First Friday Fun Fests are continuing through October. Free storytimes and programs for children and teens are also offered throughout the year at all of FCPL’s branches. For additional information please visit FCPL.org.
